EU Scholarship Programme for Cypriot Youth at UWC Alumni

Deren Sanıvar and Liana Liu Ioannides, alumni of the EU Scholarship Programme for Cypriot Youth at UWC, have been featured as panelists at the Delphi Economic Forum.

Nicosia, Cyprus – 30 May 2024 - The Directorate General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM) of the European Commission extended a special invitation to alumni of the EU Scholarship Programme for Cypriot Youth at UWC (United World Colleges) to participate in a prestigious panel discussion at the Delphi Economic Forum that took place between 10 and 13 April 2024. 

This panel discussion, under the thematic pillar of education, titled "Youth as Agents of Peace: Testimonies from the United World Colleges' Students," showcased the transformative power of education at the United World Colleges in fostering peace and understanding in diverse communities. The panel was chaired by Ioannis Hadjiyiannis, Head of Unit “Horizontal Policies” and Head of the Athens Office at DG REFORM, European Commission, Greece and alumnus of the UWC Adriatic (91-93).

Panelists Deren Sanıvar and Liana Liu Ioannides, both alumni of the EU Scholarship Programme for Cypriot Youth at UWC, coming from different communities in Cyprus, brought their unique perspectives and experiences to the discussion. They were joined by Samra Hasic and Karlo Santic, current students of UWC Mostar, an international high school with the explicit aim to contribute to the reconstruction of a post-conflict society.

Their participation highlighted the importance of empowering youth as catalysts for peacebuilding and reconciliation in conflict-affected regions. Through their testimonies, Liana and Deren shed light on the role of education in fostering intercultural dialogue, empathy, and collaboration among young people, transcending barriers, and promoting a shared vision of peace and prosperity.

Expressing gratitude to the European Union, Liana and Deren emphasized the invaluable opportunities provided through the EU Scholarship Programme for Cypriot Youth at UWC, which enabled them to pursue their education at UWC and contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding efforts in Cyprus. 

The panel discussion served as a platform for exchange and inspiration, demonstrating the EU's dedication to fostering cooperation and understanding among diverse communities. It underscored the significance of investing in education as a powerful tool for building a more inclusive and peaceful future in Cyprus and beyond.
